Auto Generation of Bike Serial Numbers

Or have the ability to check in serialized items without a serial number. In our old system bikes that did not have serial numbers were considered not assembled.
Additionally, having a box next to serial number that marks them as built would be excellent. Our current workaround is to add the builder's initials in SN#2 to show that the item has been built and is ready to go.

I'm trying to understand why you want this. It seems it would lead to potential mistakes later. You can goods in serialized items without adding their serial numbers. You can add them later as their assembled or at the time of sale.
Are you trying to figure out a way to keep track of what bikes are built and what bikes are still in cartons?

Yes, I agree. I think we should be able to edit serial numbers at any time because a serial number could have been entered incorrectly as well. I would like this feature.

Gina Ortiz its already there. See my other response

Why not just type TBC “to be confirmed”. Then if you see this in future you’ll know it’s temporary. If it’s a random number, you might think it’s a genuine serial number

Marc Andrews I think the main issue I’m trying to get across is the extra time it takes to create each individual serial number for the given bike as you take goods in. If you could simply update the qty’s, then hit a button that generates temp serial numbers (with a predetermined leading set of characters as you suggested) for all the serialized items on the PO, it would save a good bit of time.

Marc Andrews I was entering XXX for temporary serial numbers, but it will only let you use any given letter or number combination ONE TIME, so the second bike would have to be XXY, and the next one would have to be XXZ, etc. So TBC would only work for one bike, ever. That's a lot to deal with when you are just trying to get bikes received into your system. Moreover, I have not yet figured out how to change that temporary serial number once it's entered - there must be a way but I haven't found it yet - so then I can't put the actual serial number in place of the one I created to be temporary.

Gina Ortiz you can type TEMPXXXX and them some random letters and or numbers (XXXX). Once the genuine serial number replaces TEMPXXXX, there is no duplicate issue any longer. You can edit serial numbers through the item menu in backoffice, as long as it has not been sold and sale completed. See attached

Drew Jordan I understand. If you are taking in larger volumes, this could become a pain. I would recommend all the temporary serial numbers having a TEMP prefix, so that they will be recognised as temporary.

Marc Andrews Oh!! I have some temp ones that I assigned and could not figure out how to change to the real serial number. Now I can do it. Thank you!
