When creating new items, it would be helpful if it alerted you straight away if there is already an item with that number in your system, rather than filling everything in, saving it, only for it to come up red at the bottom. It's a lot of work that could be avoided.

I agree. Also, maybe the system could offer us the option to create a number for us that is not already in use. I created several items just this weekend where I had to re-create my product number 3 or more times because each time it was a number already in use. I might suggest a suggested number that would automatically supply the next sequential available number, and we could accept it or change it.

If I'm manually creating items I always do a search first to see if it is already on. I've been caught out too many times by what you're saying!
If you've got lots of codes to check, try importing the list into a wizard. You'll soon see if there are any matches.
I suppose the Create New Item pop-up box could have optional boxes to put in the Supplier Code and EAN... If there is a match then a message:
'This Supplier code/EAN is already in use against 'this Item' (live link to it)'
