Exchange & Return Refunds When Original Payment Is a Deposit

If a transaction is rung out using a deposit, there is no way to refund the customer to their credit card when processing an exchange or return. Refunds can only be issued by cash or check.
Specific situation:
Parents (“Santa”) ordered the wrong size bikes. The bikes were picked up at a later date, so the final transaction wasn’t completed until pickup. After Christmas, they returned to exchange the bikes for the correct size. I was unable to refund the price difference to their credit card because the original payment was tendered as a deposit. The system only allowed a refund via cash or check. I assume this is the same situation when processing a full return.
This created an awkward and difficult situation, as the customer understandably expected the refund to be returned to their credit card.
