Add inactive (pre-season) items to Colour Group without making them active

During Pre-Season Setup we face the issue that if you add a product to an already active colour group it will automatically make the pre-season product active and show on it on the website.
In the past we have been advised to tick the "exclude from site 1" box on the general set up page, this will make the product not show on facet search pages, however, the product will still shows within the "colour picker" of an active current season product.
This method also caused issues with Google, as it meant that there was a lot of active product with zero stock, that was not visible on our site.
We need the functionality of the Colour picker to make setup for multiple colours more efficient, but we need it to not make pre-season items active during pre-season setup.
If there was a way that colour groups could look at the expected arrival date of a product and add it to the colour group on that date, it would make pre-season setup a lot more efficient because at season change over we having to spend a lot of time going through all of new products and juggle all of the colour groups.

Hey Will Condie, this is a great idea! It is complex to implement based on our current system so we're going to review it.
In the meantime if anyone is interested in this, then please up-vote and comment so we can give this an appropriate priority.
Thanks,
Ben
