Hi Citrus-Lime Team,

I'd like to request an enhancement to the Tax Breakdown Report that would make preparing our California Sales & Use Tax returns significantly easier and more efficient. Please add the ability to include Department and Category in the Tax Breakdown Report.

Why?

California requires us to separate non-taxable sales into different reporting categories, including Repair & Installation Labor vs other types of exempt sales.

At Pismo Bikes, all of our Repair & Installation Labor transactions fall under our SERVICE Department. However, the current Tax Breakdown Report does not display the Department or Category associated with each transaction.

Instead, the report includes a "Transaction Reference" column, which pulls information from the title of the Work Order, Special Order, or other sales document. Unfortunately, this information is often blank or doesn't provide enough detail to determine why sales tax wasn't collected.

For example, if we sell a bicycle at wholesale cost to another dealer, that transaction may not have a note or meaningful Transaction Reference. Without seeing the Department or Category, I must run additional reports to identify why no sales tax was collected. This requires considerable additional filtering, sorting, cross-referencing, and summing just to prepare our sales tax return accurately. When we have a mix of Repair & Installation Labor, and other reasons for not collecting sales tax, if the Department and Category were shown, I could easily sort and sum the various types of no-tax sales. Bike sales could be grouped together, while all Service sales could be grouped together.

My request: Could Citrus-Lime add the ability to customize the Tax Breakdown Report by selecting additional columns, particularly Department and Category?

Having these fields available would allow us to quickly identify and categorize non-taxable transactions without having to run multiple reports. I estimate this enhancement would save me at least an hour every time I prepare our sales tax filing.

I imagine other California retailers, and potentially retailers in other states, would benefit from this functionality as well.
