Apply points at point of order not when the items are purchased

Currently, points are only processed when an order is tendered through the system, rather than at the point of ordering.
This creates a problem when running bonus point promtions, as the points will not be applied if the order is tendered after the promotion has finished.
For example, running a 'double points weekend' would not work, as orders placed on the Sunday would not be tendered until the Monday and would then only be awarded standard points.

Assign Points to order at point of Purchase

At the moment points only get applied to an account when the order has been processed. However, we had a points offer the ran until Christmas Day. As our warehouse closed from 13:00 on Christmas Eve until 29th. Orders From 13:00 on Christmas eve until midnight Christmas Day will not have the double points applied and we have to go in manually to issue these rewards.
Allocating a points value to an order at the point of purchase instead of allocating them to an account when the order is processed would solve the issue here.

We've working on fixing this as I type. I have a quick question, we plan to look at the order creation date for all orders so the promotion is applied based on the date of order creation, if the transaction is not linked to an order then the transaction date is used.
- This will mean ecommerce and C&C orders apply promotions based on the date the order was placed online
- It will mean that worksorders / special orders placed in store will use the order creation date
- The side effect would be that if I ordered a bike outside a promotion period and collected it within a promotion period the promotion would not be applied.

Neil McQuillan: Sounds good to me. If point 3 happens we could always apply the points manually for the customer if it was queried. This would be a massive improvement to the reverse.
Neil McQuillan
Ben: Great, I cannot solve point 3 without abandoning the whole venture which I suspect would long grass it indefinitely.

Neil McQuillan: thanks Neil! - I'm fine with that - if someone orders a bike expecting that they will be getting, say, 1x points, why should they benefit by an unexpected bonus promotion of 5x? IMO the premise of promotions is to trigger the original conversion behaviour.

Agree this is a major issue! Personally I don't favour allocating to customer at point of order - scenario of customer placing order for £10k of kit, receiving points and spending them, and then cancelling the order before shipped. In my view there needs to be a pre-allocation at time of order, which is then released/awarded to customers account when it is finally tendered/shipped.

Mark Rose: Agree with this. I suggest POS uses the "Work Order/Layaway Created Date" and then looks for promotions live during that period when being tendered (or something to that affect). Perhaps with a rule of "whichever is greater" if it conflicts with being tendered on a date when another promotion is running.

We experienced this issue over Black Friday 2020 and a colleague and I had to spend an hour each day modifying rewards points allocated, it was a real hassle.

Neil McQuillan We were just about to create a marketing plan of double points weekends on traditionally quieter periods and realised that it is actually quite difficult to run a double points weekend (or any short term rewards promotion) online as the orders may not be despatched on the dates you run. Can you see any way in which transactions processed using a work order or layaway could collect the points using the date the order was created and therefore using any promotions that were active on that date?
I understand this appears to be complex but feel that we are going to really struggle to run effective points promotions, advertised for set dates, without it.
