Countdown to free postage

I've noticed on a few websites encouraging people to checkout within a certain amount of time to be rewarded with free postage or futher discount.
I imagine someone somewhere has worked out the average time it takes to make a conversion and use this to their advantage.
Can countdown timers be used in this way? and before Christmas for last chance shipping.

Has any progress been made on this, it would make a great site wide promotion tool, "just add x amount for free shipping"

This also includes a concept for coupons covering free shipping but it gives an idea how we might see this being implemented.

This is a great idea, who else would be interested in this? It's definitely possible to do as well but only after a size has been selected (as differing sizes can have differing shipping options based on weight or the location of the stock (e.g. Large is in a different warehouse/shop)).
