Custom messages on checkout

I believe that this option was previously available and has now been discontinued. But would it be possible to add a custom message either in the basket or at checkout?
My initial purpose for this is to direct customers who purchase certain items to select the correct delivery option.
It could also be further used to up-sell, send seasons greetings, add reminders - (x amount of shopping days until Christmas - or bank holiday opening hours) - or simply personalise the customers shopping experience.

This sounds like a bit of a mix of things and perhaps Adam is looking for item specific messages?
I think a general one, for example order within the next X hours/minutes for dispatch today, would be a welcome update and add urgency for a customer to place an order

If you setup the courier integration module correctly it ought to show the correct delivery options for the weight of the item and delivery location wherever it is globally, and charge the correct fee, the print the courier correct label will then print for you at despatch.
The idea you have is a good one however, about putting a message in, we'll wait see if other customers vote this one up :-)

Neil McQuillan: Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately In this case setting up the courier integration is not possible for some of our items.
Some of our items are adaptions that people have tailored onto their own personal Rucksacks and Day Packs - for example new pouches on the front, mesh bladders on the sides, new more comfortable straps and the lid removing and making adjustable etc.
They select the modifications they require as items, send us their pack and then we send the modified item out once complete.
The problem is that the whole Rucksack once complete may weigh about 3kg - but each item we sew on only weighs a couple of hundred grams at most!
If I over weight each item to take the rucksack weight into account, and the customer then adds numerous modifications - the courier then thinks that the total weight is hugely inflated and charges accordingly - Hope this makes sense?

Adam: It certainly does, cool service you offer there.
The only solution would be to have a 'Customised Rucksack Delivery' item with the base weight pushing it into the correct courier band, it might be worth you trying this to see if this helps or just makes it more complex.
I do like your general message idea so lets see if it gets traction, but I wanted to chuck the above in as an idea.

Neil McQuillan: This may well work - I think this was a similar process to what we used to use. Thanks for the suggestion - I will definitely look into that, many thanks.
