Stop duplication of items available from two different suppliers

It has long been a frustration that an identical item that is available from more than one SIM supplier, sometimes ends up on the POS as two or more separate items ie it's been downloaded from each supplier at some point. Although it is the same product, each supplier will use a different ILC which is why we end up with multiple items on the till. This can get confusing and it can be time consuming to make one item inactive and creating secondary suppliers etc.
It occured to me that the system could possibly merge them using the EAN/Alias code (providing it is on the SIM file) perhaps giving a message of 'This product alias already exists. Do you want to add a secondary supplier?'
I was looking at this with one such product and the alias code is present from both suppliers but one of them has a '0' at the beginning. Has this code been added by Citrus Lime during the download? Of course, if you scan this code in to the Till, this code means nothing.

This was made live in our update on the 17th of April, the automation has not tagged it as complete, so I have just done so now. The full skinny is here, but here is a screenshot from the article.
